This 1920s King William bungalow has a staircase made out of vintage railroad tracks

Though built in 1920, a King William Historic District bungalow recently listed for $1.2 million is full of modern and quirky touches, including stairs built from reclaimed railroad tracks and other installations created by San Antonio visual artists.

The property's modernist bent is immediately apparent from the curb, where one first notices an industrial fence of metal mesh and a minimalist, xeriscaped yard.  The modern indicators offset the home's classic wrap-around porch, a common feature among King William residential properties.

The interplay of old and new continues throughout the 3,186 square-foot house. Original pinewood floors, high ceilings and elegant transoms contrast with modern light fixtures and cold steel touches. One of the most modern details in the four-bedroom, three-and-a-half-bath property is the staircase, which was constructed by prolific local metal sculptor Cakky Brawley, who utilized old railroad tracks.

Brawley isn't the only artist who left her mark on the property. San Antonio steel artist James Hetherington designed the modern carport and local woodworker Peter Zubiate made custom doors for the space. Other modern updates to the original house include a steel one-and-a-half-story addition, connected to the main house through a breezeway.

The master bedroom's present-day touches include its charcoal black walls and high, slatted windows. Similar windows also appear in the en suite bathroom, which features stark white subway tile and contemporary his-and-hers sinks. The primary suite also includes a large walk-in closet and adjoining private study.

The bright study is bathed in natural light from a pattern of repeating slit windows and sliding glass doors, which open onto the back deck. Outside, the deck completely replaces the need for a lawn, offering both a comfortable lounge area and a small pool.

This home is listed by Shyler Leon with Phyllis Browning Co.
