A historic San Antonio home saved from demolition by chef Andrew Weissman is back on the market

A history-filled Tobin Hill home recently saved from demolition by renowned chef Andrew Weissman and preservationist May Chu is back on the market for $895,000.

The pair swooped in to rescue the 1913 Prairie-style home last July with Chu taking ownership and Weissman revealing plans for a wine bar on the first floor. Famous dancer Russell "La Teri" Hughes grew up in the residence, and it subsequently became the Catholic student center for nearby San Antonio College.

Broker Allen Gamez, who's now representing the nearly 8,000-square-foot property, said Chu put it back on the market after plans for the wine bar fell through.

"There were scheduling conflicts," Gamez said. "They just didn't have the time, to be honest."

The three-story home boasts plenty of distinctive charm, from its Asian-style peaked roof and sweeping balconies to its palatial front porch and dramatic interior woodwork. However, Gamez noted that it needs extensive renovation.

"There's a lot of history in the property," Gamez said. "Someone needs to come in and invest the time to restore it to its former beauty."

This home is listed by Allen Gamez with Phyllis Browning Co.
