San Anto Cultural Arts Mural re-dedication & Open House

Critic's Pick Release Date: 2011-01-19

“End Barrio Warfare,” one of San Anto Cultural Arts Center’s cornerstone Westside murals “designed to confront the neighborhood’s violence and ask passersby to instead focus on the area’s cultural strength and beauty,” will be re-dedicated on Saturday. During a recent restoration project, the original mural (which was created in 1998) was painted over to make way for an updated version on parachute cloth. Since the original mural site is now for sale, SACA decided to relocate “End Barrio Warfare” to 1401 South Brazos. After the re-dedication ceremony (which includes music and poetry) and a blessing by Father Martin Elsner of Our Lady of Guadalupe Church, the celebration continues at SACA’s new digs on El Paso Street — where guests will find an onsite taco truck, grooves courtesy of DJ JJ Lopez, and no shortage of good vibes. Mural re-dedication: free, 1pm, 1401 S Brazos (at S Laredo). Gabriela Santiago will lead a one-mile bike ride between the two locations. Open house: free, 2-6pm, San Anto Cultural Arts Center, 2120 El Paso, (210) 226-7466, sananto.org.
