Thanks to Congress, the seven-day period President Lyndon B. Johnson originally authorized as “National Hispanic Heritage Week” back in 1968 became a month-long celebration in 1989. It’s still early in the game, but so far SAC gets the award for SA’s most enthusiastic organizer of events. A performance by Mariachi Sonido del Alma ushers in this week’s festivities (11am-1pm Wed in the Loftin Student Center’s Fiesta Room). Los Texmaniacs take the Fiesta Room’s stage the following day (11am-12pm Thur), and Raul Ramos will speak about his book Beyond the Alamo on Friday (11am in the Nursing Allied Health Complex, 218). On Tuesday, Ester Morales Liedecke presents Cooking with Mama: The Art of Making Homemade Tortillas (12:15-1:30pm in the Loftin Student Center’s Craft Room). And SAC’s mall area hosts the Annual Antojitos Festival, a lunch-hour playground with music, refreshments, and a low-rider show from 10am-2pm on Wednesday.
