The Return of Johnny V

Related stories

The Return of Johnny V (dir. Aaron Lee López, Ryan Young) follows the character of Johnny V (2009's The Curse of the Lechusa … and it's "Lechuza," guys) in what co-director López calls "the coolest movie ever made with sex, drugs, and rock 'n' roll." He's joking, I hope. The plot involves vengeance, a Zeta, and torture. Judging by the teaser, the film looks like a '70s TV B-movie: so bad, it's great. 9pm Sun, Feb 26

Chico & Rita (dir. Toño Errando, Javier Mariscal, Fernando Trueba) has a real chance of winning an Oscar for Best Animated Feature next Sunday (see review next week). 7pm Friday, March 2

El Gran Calavera (The Great Madcap) (1949, dir. Luis Buñuel). I think it's great the Special Seniors Screening has this early Buñuel masterpiece from his Mexican period. But if you make a festival and have this movie with you, you just don't show it only at 9 a.m. — you find a way to show it at prime time as well. Having said that, this movie is worth being late to work for. 9am Fri, Mar 2

American Mustache (writ./dir. Esteban Zul). Just like Woody Allen did with 1966's What's Up Tiger Lily (a redubbed gem that transformed a Japanese spy comedy into the story of a guy looking for a stolen secret egg salad recipe), Zul redubbed and re-cut American Me to send Edward James Olmos looking for his stolen mustache. A world premiere especially written and performed live for CineFestival. 9pm Thu, March 1
