JJF: Like a sort of—
Who do you think the film is going to be for? Jane Austen fans or your followers?
JH: We definitely made the movie for Jane Austen [fans]—we were aware that they would see it. And we didn’t want to alienate them in any way because, you know, it’s the story of a Jane Austen fan. And I think we walked that line carefully without being overtly mean or disrespectful. We gently teased fandom—well, maybe not so gently—and I think, from what I’ve heard, the Janeites have loved it. We’ve had big special-interest screenings where they come all dressed up. They love it ... I think it’s great that they can laugh at themselves, but really it’s so luxurious to just sit and take in this over-the-top world. Even though it’s not done perfectly, it’s still steeped in Regency. And the characters are still very similar and beloved. But I also think other people see it and think, “This is hilarious!” and,“Look at these girls!” I think both sides will enjoy it.
