The revolution will not be televised, but it sure as hell is being broadcast. Last February, Tommy Calvert launched KROV-FM as a labor of love and with a huge leap of faith — the former attributable to strong community ties, the latter because of the high digital (HD) broadcast requires a special radio or app-equipped smartphone to receive it. "I figured if we got 2,000 listeners after the first year we'd be OK," Calvert said. "We've done much, much more than that." And how. Calvert intuitively suspected — perhaps informed by his own musical roots as a classically trained pianist and former San Antonio Boys' Choir member — people yearned for musical variety beyond formulaic, mainstream fare. He was right. The station — home to Good Job Texas and On Air with Ricardo — now has 106,565 listeners by one official count and 39,000 daily streamers.
