Even through dark glasses, curator Alex Rubio makes exciting discoveries. An accomplished contemporary artist in his own right (his large-scale painting The Four Horsemen is among the local treasures in the SAMA exhibition "San Antonio Collects: Contemporary"), Rubio is possibly best recognized as the black-clad leader of Blue Star Contemporary Art Center's outreach umbrella MOSAIC, a vital program that "takes art into the streets, focusing on collaborative exchanges and promoting visual literacy and expression in the community." A true champion of emerging talent, Rubio's given many an artist their first opportunity to show work through his annual Contemporary Art Month exhibition "Nueva Generación." Similarly, exhibitions at the year-old R Gallery he runs (with fellow Best of SA winner Roland "Nightrocker" Fuentes, above) showcase newcomers like recent college graduate Hugo Yebra, an artist Rubio met while guest judging a student exhibition at University of the Incarnate Word.
