Aural Pleasure Review

Songwriter, vocalist and renowned bassist Stephen Bruner (better known as Thundercat) is someone who refuses to settle down into one artistic mode. On Apocalypse, his sophomore effort, Bruner once again teams up with Flying Lotus to create a set of songs as thought-provoking as they are earthy and emotional. An album of what could best be described as dream-funk, Apocalypse alternately soars and grinds though 12 tracks of exquisite bass-playing, delicate vocal and production flourishes, and R&B deconstructionism. It’s a sweaty, dimly-lit triumph of an album that will have people associating Thundercat with the wider experimentalism that is refreshingly sweeping though varying subgenres of the R&B world.
