The Very Best: 'MTMTMK'
Published: July 25, 2012
The marriage of London-based production/DJ duo Radioclit and Malawian singer Esau Mwamwaya, The Very Best has yielded both deeply soulful and intoxicatingly carefree moments through two mixtapes and one album before MTMTMK. Like previous efforts, these are songs of joyously defiant celebration — most notably, “We OK” — that juxtapose the glossy sounds of western big-bass with elements of traditional stylings from Mwamwaya’s homeland in Africa’s southeast. More spacious (see: “Rumbae”) and even more stylistically diverse (the pastoral/tribal “Nkango”) than their debut, MTMTMK is a refreshing mix of dance, hip-hop, African, and American pop sure to make you lighter of soul and step.
