The Heroine

Let's be honest, here: any "best-of" list you find out there is a subjective, incomplete, inaccurate and, often times, just plain funny concoction that says more about the person who compiled it than the music itself. There is no way anyone can listen to every single album that's released in a year, especially those who — like me— enjoy a wide range of styles in several languages. Even those who brag about having listened to every release probably spent very little time with each album; not a recommended thing to do, since the power of an album grows or diminishes the more you get to know them. Still, those lists (even the bad ones) serve a valuable purpose: here and there, you are able to discover some wonderful albums you may have missed.

Different writers have different methods to elaborate the list. Some, as Current contributor J.D. Swerzenski shared in this same issue, choose their "best" album of the year based on how many times the album was played in the last 12 months. Myself? I keep a list on the wall and, whenever something hits me (hits me really hard), I write it down. At the end of the year, I choose my "best" in each category.

Here they are. Don't agree? Share yours with us in the comments section of this story, and help us discover what this, yet another stupid list, left out.
