Taddy Porter and Filligar play SA

Known for occasionally bringing in some killer national and regional talent, Jack's Bar is kicking off 2013 right — on January 20 the venue will host Taddy Porter and Filligar, a dynamic duo of solid young rock bands. The former is a fast-ascending outfit bubbling over with sweltering and rocking blues and steadfast soul, looking to move you in more ways than one. The latter are already seasoned veterans of the indie-rock world, known for stellar live performances, and poised as guardians of a new pure rock 'n' roll revival. Taddy Porter

Stillwater, Oklahoma's Taddy Porter will sound familiar to you. First of all, tracks from their warmly received 2010 debut album have been used on TV's Entourage and Monday Night Football. Secondly, the band's sound harkens back to the first wave American psych-rock, Motown soul, and the muddy but pretty blues-rock of Creedence Clearwater Revival — sounds deeply ingrained in our collective consciousness, as charming and easy-going as they are alive with passionate struggle.

Touring in support of their sophomore album Stay Golden (out Feb 26 on Primary Wave Records), Taddy Porter brings a live show hallmarked by a soulful fever and the sweaty euphoria that accompanies it. This is one of those special outfits, like so many of the forebears of the garage blues sound (old or new) that is simply built to do all their growing and innovating on stage. Lead singer Andy Brewer told the Current that the group's live groove is defined by passion and filled with an energy gleaned in part from the band's shared love of music ranging from fuzzy blues to '60s pop to garage soul.

"If I had to put my finger on someone or some band, it would be Joe Cocker," said Brewer about the band's live influences. "At first glance, you would say there is something wrong with him, but then you listen and start to feel what he is singing." Taddy Porter's live set, like the brew that is their namesake, is sure to be equal parts heady and heavy.

Filligar

Hailing from Chicago, Filligar has been busy since its basement beginnings in 2000, when the foursome were in their early teens. Starting off with 2002's The Flipside (also the original band name), Filligar has recorded eight albums of their updated brand of exuberant Midwest rock 'n' roll, earned acclaim for captivating live performances, and been named one of SPIN's Next Big Things after CMJ last year. Influenced by the likes of Wilco, the Rolling Stones, the Doors, and the Band, the guys brought up two other key inspirations when the Current asked about their live show.

"Two years ago we played Summerfest in Milwaukee and were able to catch Tom Petty and ZZ Top's set after we were done," said drummer Pete Mathias. "That concert has stuck with us over the years. That sort of staying power, that interpersonal experience, is what we hope everyone gets out of our shows."

Expect Filligar, who will open the show, to deliver the kind of good ol' rock performance that has been kept working, striving, and surviving America sane for generations.*
