Sleigh Bells: ‘Bitter Rivals’

Photo: , License: N/A

You probably know Sleigh Bells’ sound. If not, imagine Toni Basil singing “Mickey” with Nine Inch Nails backing her, and you're about in the ballpark. In short, nothing has changed on Bitter Rivals, the Florida duo's third full-length. Singer Alexis Krauss further hones her bad girl next-door allure, while guitarist-producer Derek E. Miller mostly just finds more Jock Jams sound effects to throw in the mix. This should be enough to keep Bitter Rivals on par with last year's Reign of Terror. Unfortunately, the band seems to be working with a slowly depleting bank of hooks, and it doesn't take long for things to get grating. Highlights “Sugarcane” and “Young Legends” manage to buoy things a little, but not enough to keep Rivals afloat.
