Second-best party of the year
Published: April 11, 2012
If you didn't go to Nightrocker last Thursday, you missed the second best party of the year (the Current's Best of Party is coming up April 27 at Sunset Station and tickets are going fast; get yours at sacurrent.com).
Most of the winners of our recent reader's music poll showed up to accept their award and VIP passes to our Best of Party. Those who didn't can send me an email (elopetegui@sacurrent.com) so we can arrange to pick up your awards and VIP passes at the Current's office.
Thanks to all the fans and bands/artists who showed up, to Roland Nightrocker for letting us basically take over the club, to the comedians who performed (Javier Bazaldua, Tommy Muñoz, Raúl Sánchez, Avery Moore, George Anthony, Josh Ramón, and Cody Odelland ... forgive me if I forgot anyone), and Local 782 for their usual all-around good vibes. Special thanks to Best Electronica winner Trip the Light and Most Underrated Band winner The Rich Hands for two solid sets. I was too spent to stay and see Pop Pistol, which closed the show, but I did catch the Rich Hands' awesome, in-your-face performance. They're a hard-rocking, punkish version of the Kinks that will leave you speechless. These brats earned a freaking feature from us soon.
But the older dudes can play too, and Sexto Sol is like a wine that gets better with time. They're not that old, but they've been together forever. Even though they don't play too often anymore, they rock hard when they do. Their next appearance is a show on Saturday, April 14, at Nightrocker Live (605 San Pedro, $10) with J.J. López (DJ last seen in Ray Santisteban's Neighborhood Film Project-winning short Murals y Más; spinning at 9 p.m. and midnight), Los Nahuatlatos (10 p.m.), and Los De Esta Noche (11:15 p.m.). Sexto Sol hits the stage at 12:30 a.m. If you've seen Sexto Sol, you're probably going to this one; if you haven't, don't miss it — with these guys, any show could be their last.
