What unites their bristle and beauty is balance and detail: the rockers always have some melodic allure, and the ballads rock. Casual touches and subtle production elements bridge the gap and give the songs lasting power. "We probably spend more time on that than anything else," Walker says, as Cleaver completes her thought. "More than we do writing," he says. "Trying to figure out all that little stuff that nobody pays any attention to."
They're happy to be on the road with their regional buddies bringing Midwestern comity southward.
"The little community that's here, there's a lot of people that work together and support one another," Walker says. "[Because nobody] expects a damn thing out of you, there's a little collective going, 'Yeah? We'll show you.'" •
