I see nothing wrong with the word "supergroup" (a band with its members being well-established soloists or coming from other, well-established bands), and that's exactly what Los Super Seven are. The only thing they are not is, precisely, seven, but many more.

The band's 1998 Mexican-American-flavored self-titled debut included members of Los Lobos, Flaco Jiménez, Freddy Fender, Doug Sahm, Los Texmaniacs' Max Baca, and others (the album won a Grammy for Best Mexican-American performance); 2001's Canto had a more Afro-Cuban, Latin American vibe and added people like Brazil's Caetano Veloso and Ozomatli's Wil-Dog; 2005's Heard it on the X was all Texas rock 'n' roll and the list of guests grew: Lyle Lovett, Raúl Malo, Rodney Crowell, and many more.

The new incarnation of Los Super Seven (including Los Lobos' David Hidalgo and César Rosas for sure, maybe Steve Berlin as well) perform Saturday at Texas Pride Barbecue.

"We just acquired the [Los Super Seven] name again," Hidalgo told the Current. "Now we can use it again, and we'll see if we can get something going."

The other members for the SA stop include Los Texmaniacs' Max Baca, Flaco Jiménez, Mexican-American country artist Rick Treviño, and more might join them. "If Rubén Ramos is not working on that day, I'm sure he'll be there," said Hidalgo, who, along with Los Lobos, will be opening Neil Young's new North American tour soon.

Los Texmaniacs might perform a small set featuring songs from Texas Towns & Tex-Mex Sounds, their new CD released by Smithsonian Folkways, but most of the night will be devoted to Los Super Seven.

"Its going to be a blast," Baca told the Current. "We'll be doing Super Seven material as well as the individual bands' music, and classics like Freddy Fender tunes. That's what makes it so fun when we get together, hearing Flaco doing Los Lobos material, Los Lobos doing Texmaniacs, [Treviño], a country singer, killing it on Spanish ballads ...  It's a really special vibe."
