Local music preview 2013

With 2013 now upon us and the foretold apocalypse averted for now, we set our energies toward realizing and lifting high our hefty hopes for what's to come. For the most part, you're on your own with that; but the Current gives you this handy list of a few upcoming album releases to get excited about. The list is by no means exhaustive or binding, but it is a darn good start.

Saakred
What: FLY HI LP. Highly experimental, post-rock, post-drone, audiovisual pastiche from San Antonio's young and passionate avant-garde princess. New project from Melissa Rodríguez also on the horizon: Saakred y Las Teardrops, an EP of "witchy desert blues."
When: March and late Fall.

Blackbird Sing
What: Highly anticipated debut full-length Enemies from Years of Loving. Fiery, emotional, hill country wilderness and San Anto mischievousness — out on Shiner Records. This record promises to be an exemplar of the next generation of TX music.
When: Late January.

Something Fiction
What: A collection of new music and remixes (by people like Skytree, Gonjasufi, and RUN DMT) from 2011's mind-bending Botany LP, the Mycology EP will be a welcome holdover until this promising young group's next full album.
When: January.

Sons of Sancho
What: The Rodents of Yanaguana EP will be a transitional release for these stalwart punk-fusion rockers. You can expect all the bombast and bravado that this clan brings to the table, just in a bite-sized package.
When: Early this year.

Nick Mery
What: Nick Mery's Gentlemen Streets is the R&B/electronic vibe side of the man (Merykid) Current readers voted "Most Overrated" in 2012. A badge of honor he wears with pride.
When: Late February.

Marcus Rubio
What: Technically a San Anto expat, Rubio will once again be involved in several projects this year. The most notable is a solo album entitled h_h to be released on the Chicago-based label Already Dead Tapes. Always unpredictable, Rubio promises this record will be "half ambient music and half long-form pop songs, sort of pushing the more experimental elements of Hello Dallas a little further."
When: February or March.

Daniela Riojas
What: Already getting noticed for her work in photography and most recently video production/direction (she directed the video for Pop Pistol's "No New Years Know"), "ZaaZaa" Riojas is releasing Asperatus, her first musical project. The album will be "a compilation of innocent musings from a girl who has left the muck of murky, dark lands and is becoming clean as she finds new heights, closer to the heavens."
When: Summer.

El Campo (fka Pillow Talk)
What: Recorded at Top Hat in Austin and a Tobin Hill living room, El Campo's self-titled album will be a wide-open wandering, indie-country affair, complete with banjo and pedal steel.
When: Spring.
