Local collective Ghostpizza drops its first compilation

Photo: , License: N/A

On any given day, if you ask Ghostpizza founder and leader Miguel Nelson just what exactly this awesomely named entity is, you get some variant of his standard answer.

"Ghostpizza is associated with fun stuff," he said. "If you see the name attached to something, it's like a seal of certified fun." And while that may sound like something one simply says, it seems to be about the most fitting description of the uniting thread among the diverse acts and activities affiliated with the constantly evolving collective. Perhaps slightly more illuminating, the Ghostpizza website describes the entity as "a collection of musicians, DJs, rappers, artists, dudes, and babes." Sound like fun? On Saturday, Ghostpizza invites you to War Room to join in celebrating the release of their first music compilation Champions Vol. 1. Apart from the general appeal of "fun," here are some details about the exciting young artists on this bill.

Western Tink & Beautiful Lou

This duo, better known collectively as Mobbin' No Sobbin,' has made quite a name for themselves over the past few years. Rapper Western Tink is a vintage southern rap wordsmith, his rhymes replete with wild women, weed, braggadocio, and just enough lazy shady haze. Tink has, over the past year or so, garnered the much-deserved attention of several national media outlets including The Fader. San Antonio producer and wunderkind Beautiful Lou has created tracks for the likes of Lil B the Based God, A$AP Rocky, Kitty Pryde and Squadda B — among others. His is a career on the verge of total lift off. You won't want to miss this chance to see these two potent performers together.

Sonora

Sonora Longoria (the stage name of SA native Joseph Alberto Pérez De Longoria) is a DJ and producer with a sound best described as electrotropical with elements of moombahton. In 2011, Sonora collaborated with Brazilian bass goddess Zuzuka Poderosa on a brilliant and fiery remix EP. Now, with releases on a number of small labels, including Austin's Peligrosa and Diplo's Mad Decent, Sonora is gearing up to release what promises to be a solid debut album on his newest home, Little Owl Recordings. Kinetic energy defines his live show, full of Latin swagger and glitch enshrouded bass for days. Seeing Sonora perform is an experience several adrenaline notches above your standard DJ fare.

Levii Ru$$ell, Brain Gang Blue, Special Guests

Rounding out the lineup is up and coming local rapper Levii Ru$$ell (dig his raw and bangin' debut track "Lies"), Dallas' dirty-south-meets-outer-space-beatmaker/rapper Brain Gang Blue, and some unidentified "Special Guests" in keeping with the playful mysteriousness that is Ghostpizza's modus operandi. If you love unstoppable beats, dirty rap, and wild Saturday nights — trust in Ghostpizza.
