Besides his concert Saturday at Plaza Guadalupe, salsa/Latin jazz great Eddie Palmieri will answer your questions in a not-to-be-missed event organized by the Guadalupe and presented at the UTSA Downtown campus. “A conversation with Eddie Palmieri” is a free event to be held Friday at 6 p.m. at the campus’ Buena Vista Theater (501 W Durango). After playing almost every night in May, Egshan finally finished its new EP 111 . The CD release party will be Friday at Nightrocker Live ($5, 9pm, 605 San Pedro). The event, hosted by Chronic Comic Javier Bazaldua, will open with music comedian Art Martínez and feature performances by Scarlet Darlings and Heather Go Psycho. A DJ will follow Egshan to finish in dance-party mode. Needless to say, the EP will also be available for $5.
The following item is the type of stuff that one never wants to write about. It is not about a show about to take place, but about a show that won’t take place, at least for a while. According to WOAI and the SAPD, up-and-coming singer-songwriter Emma Diaz was arrested in August 17 and charged with “failure to stop and render aid” to Dolores Mendoza, a homeless woman Diaz allegedly hit (and killed) a month ago while driving at the intersection of S. Alamo and Probandt.
According to the police report (based on the testimony of witnesses), at 3:09 a.m. on July 17, a blue Honda traveling “at normal speed” eastbound on S. Alamo and Nathan St. struck Mendoza and sped off “at a high rate of speed.” Mendoza was pronounced dead on the scene.
Diaz is a promising artist I’ve seen perform a couple of times. As soon as WOAI posted Diaz’s mug shot, several nasty comments appeared on WOAI’s website. But instead of kicking someone when they’re down, we better use this tragic incident to remember that things can change in an instant and we should cherish every moment. For ours’ and other people’s sake.
