RX Bandits guitarist Steve Choi reflects on 16 years and one final tour

Music: To hear Steve Choi of RX Bandits tell it, there was never a proper sit-down about changing the sound of the SoCal third-wave ska group formed in 1995. There was no mission statement, no formal realization, no heady, late-night conversation over a bowl and brews. By Adam Villela Coronado 6/29/2011

OK, the Tejanos haven't done much to attract the rockeros, but the rockeros haven't given too much of a damn about the Tejanos either. Enter Girl in a Coma. The girls played at the TMA Selena tribute in 2010, and they loved it. So why can't the rest of you embrace boots and big belt buckles? Can't we all not only get along but gain inspiration from each other?

"[In 2010] we got to play 'Si una vez' in front of the Quintanilla Family and it was such an honor," drummer Phanie Díaz told the Current via email. And they weren't just doing the TMA a favor — GIAC loves Tejano, damn it. "Besides Selena, we are also fans of Shelly Lares, Elsa García, and tons more."

GIAC loved the awards, and the awards loved them. So they got invited again, but this time things are different. "Since the band had already performed 'Si una vez' at the show, the TMA didn't want them to just do a repeat performance and told them they could choose their own songs," said band manager Faith Radle. Bravo, TMA: Another sign that the genre is ready to open its soundscape to things other than cumbia or hip-hop.

"We will be doing two of our own songs," said Phanie. "One will be a Spanish version of 'Smart,'" said Phanie, referring to the first single off Exits & All the Rest, GIAC's latest album.
