Disco Disco Disco Fest takes '70s lightshow experience into the third dimension

Toronto's MSTRKRFT, one of the highlights of Disco Disco Disco: 3D Electronic Experience.

LiveIn210, San Antonio's most ambitious concert promotions company, doesn't usually spend time and money doing little things — they're the ones who brought Ghostland Observatory, Interpol, and Lauryn Hill to San Antonio, among others. But its latest project may very well be the biggest of them all so far.

"Toob all day … Dance all night" is the motto chosen for "Disco Disco Disco: 3D Electronic Experience," a LiveIn210/3 Dimension Media event that will turn music into a visual experience unlike anything we've seen in town. Right off the bat, attendees receive a pair of 3-D glasses. While deejays and bands play onstage, an elaborate light show by Austin's Creative Production & Design is expected to turn the event into a vibrant visual feast. Nerd Alert Design models dressed in Star Trek/Star Wars themes will take 3-D photos of you (or you can snap your own if you have an iPhone and the 99-cent 3-D Eyes app).

"This is an updated version of what the disco events were in the '70s," said Brandon Faucett, a designer at 3 Dimension Media and concept designer at LiveIn210. "In every different concert we want to add a different and more advanced level of technology and connectivity between the artist and the concert-goer."

The music itself is an eclectic mix of electronic streams ranging from Latin to European styles. The list of performers includes Toronto's MSTRKRFT (pronounced Mastercraft), the electronic/dance duo of Jesse F. Keeler of Death from Above 1979 and Al-P (Alex Puodziukas, from Ontario's Girlsareshort); Aeroplane (Belgium-based, Italian DJ/producer Vito DeLuca); Celldweller (Klayton, a Detroit-based multi-instrumentalist, producer, songwriter, performer, programmer, and re-mixer); Austin-based DJ Vegas Banger (Jeff Saville); and the locals: Crizzly (producer/DJ), Mixed Use Media (Austin/SA dance/electronica group whose The Pattern Act EP is on iTunes under their former name of Media), and Mexicans With Guns (producer Ernest Gonzales). If you do the full monty (toobing, drinking, and dancing), a couple of hours into Disco Disco Disco could be a pretty intense trip.

"Yeah, that's pretty much the whole point," Faucett said of that all-ages event. "The whole idea with concerts right now, especially electronic concerts, is that everyone already has their phone out. We're just taking it to the next level." •
