2012 Rammy Award (Best in Show): Girl in a Coma

Girl in Coma
The Rammy Award is the one category those of us at the Current select. It's for all-around players who best represent the San Antonio music scene either at home or at a national/international level (and by "player" I don't only mean the musicians themselves — the award is open to anyone in our scene who made a huge difference). This year, there were at least a couple of bands ready to make national news, but no one had it better than Girl in a Coma.
The critically acclaimed Exits and All the Rest — to many, their best album ever — earned mentions from Rolling Stone and features on NPR, and their local activity included a packed night at the Pearl and a sold-out screening of their documentary Jammin! at CineFestival (which prompted the selling of a batch of extra tickets at the last minute) and concluding outdoor concert at Guadalupe Plaza. As I'm writing this, the trio is off on a East Coast tour, and I've seen no other local band as popular as these three girls who still hang their hats (and hearts) in San Anto.
Nina Díaz (vocals, guitar), Jenn Alva (bass), and Phanie Díaz (drums) are our most respected and recognized band on the national circuit, and we salute them.
