The Green Burger

May is, apparently, national burger month. While it’s debatable whether such a culinary staple truly deserves a month of feting (whither lasagna month, or taco month, or blueberry muffin month?), screw it, we’ll take any excuse to nosh on a high-fat, cholesterol-busting, all-American fave — Fries with that.
If you feel the need to salute the obsession of J. Wellington Wimpy (of Popeye fame), there’s a few ways to get your grub on. Photo fanatics should check out Whataburger’s month-long Instagram contest. Check their social media pages for themes, and then tag your Instagam submission with @Whataburger and #Whataburger. The winner will receive free Whataburger fare for a year.

Perhaps you fancy yourself above competing for free fast food. Well, why don’t you get your high-falutin’ ass to downtown’s The Palm? On Mondays in May during lunch service, they offer their prime steak burgers and fries for $8.37, topped with your choice of fancy-pants fixin’s like prosciutto de Parma, Danish blue cheese, and wild mushrooms. Print out the coupon at thepalm.com/BurgerMondays#certificate.

Or you could just be lazy-slash-middle-class, and celebrate by sampling some favorite local burgers, as chosen by the Current staff.

The Editor in Chief
Bison Burger at The Esquire Tavern, 155 E Commerce, (210) 222-2521, esquiretavern-sa.com
Pickled onions and white cheddar top the organic bison patty; you’ll never miss beef’s higher fat and calories.

The Account Manager
Fiesta Burger at Armadillo’s, 1423 McCullough, (210) 226-7556, armadillosburgers.com
The tried-and-true SA traditional bean burger, where refried beans meet cheese, pico, and tortilla chips for everything good about food between two buns.

The Web Editor and the Art Director
Green Burger at Green Vegetarian Cuisine, multiple locations. Greensanantonio.com
Don’t just go with our humble opinions, readers vote this the Best Veggie Burger in our Best of San Antonio issue, year after year.

The Marketing Director
Texas Burger at The Cove, 606 W Cypress, (210) 227-2683, thecove.us
A little publication called Texas Monthly also singled this bean burger out, as one of the 50 best in the state.

The Senior Account Executives
Bacon Blue Cheese Burger at Highlander Bar and Grill, 5566 Fredericksburg, (210) 340-577
Bacon. Blue. Cheese. Need we say more?

Turkey Burger at Luther’s Café, 1422 N Main, (210) 223-7727, lutherscafe.com
Turkey gets spiced up with baby spinach, roasted red peppers, oregano mayo, and Swiss cheese.

The Arts Editor
Akaushi Beef Sliders, Say.She.Ate (food truck), twitter.com/say.she.ate
The beloved food truck’s signature dish is small, but mighty. Pair it with the equally notable duck fat fries.

The Account Executive
Attaboy at Cullum’s Attaboy Burgers (food truck), attaboyburgers.com
The burger du jour from these early food truck adapters is worth the surprise.
