San Antonio cooking great vegetarian food

Photo: , License: N/A

When visitors to the Alamo City think of our cuisine, they probably think of nachos, chicken fried steaks, and barbeque – not vegetables. But USA Today named a San Antonio restaurant as one of their Top-10 vegetarian establishments, alongside restaurants in New York, San Francisco and Toronto. Vegeria on Broadway serves vegan Southwestern food and a BYOB policy (for vegan beer and wine). Vegeria is one of the few vegetarian restaurants in town, but with this national publicity, maybe more San Antonio diners will foray into a plant-strong menu.

A couple of San Antonio restaurants are opening second locations. Picnikins Patio Cafe, an American restaurant at Blanco and 410, is opening its second location at Hausman Road and I-10 in mid-February. And the Hofbräu & Beer Garden is expanding to a second location at The Rim at La Cantera. Their first location is at The Quarry, on the site of the historic Alamo Cement Company's lab. Now you'll have two places to drink one of their famed Dos-A-Ritas.
