Industry News: Grilled Cheese on Wheels, a Breastaurant, TBA Opens

Photo: , License: N/A

The Grilled Cheese Truck is exactly what it sounds like – a truck serving grilled cheese sandwiches. The cheesy variations include a brie with bourbon marmalade, buffalo chicken with blue cheese, and goat cheese with basil and spinach. You can sample their sandwiches at the Fourth of July celebration at Woodlawn Lake Park. The truck will be serving free sandwiches from noon to 2 p.m. San Antonio is the first city on the truck’s Texas tour. The L.A.-based truck is opening up franchising opportunities to veterans, to be supervised by retired four-star General Wesley K. Clark.

Who doesn’t love corn? Amaize Sweet Corn is the result of 22 years of development and more than 10,000 variations tested. And it’s available for just one more week at local H-E-Bs. It comes from Crookham, a corn breeding company in Idaho. The corn is only available during the summer and in select cities, so if you’re interested in super-sweet, crunchy corn for your Fourth of July barbecue, hurry.

With Chef Jeff White taking the helm at Boiler House, some have asked what happened to James Moore, the previous chef. He’s made the move to a bar on North St. Mary’s called TBA. With Casey Lange (former owner of Oloroso), they’re bringing craft cocktails and small bites to the area. The lounge features seasonal and local produce in the food and drink, with food service starting sometime this summer. Head bartender Jonathan Yumol (formerly of the Esquire Tavern and NAO) will be serving whiskeys, bourbons, and infused liquors.

If you long to see a bronze imprint of Carmen Electra’s boobs, then save the date for Saturday, July 13. She will be at the grand opening the town of Bikinis, TX, named for Bikinis Sports Bar & Grill.  Bikinis, Tex., is  an actual place west of Luckenbach. The city was once known as Bankersmith but was purchased in July 2012 and rechristened to match the "breastaurant." To celebrate the town opening, Bikinis is throwing a party starting at noon and featuring a bikini contest (natch), bar games, Carmen Electra, and catered eats from Black’s Barbeque in Lockhart. Tickets are $5 at the gate and are also available at It should be boobtastic.

And in other sports bar news, Cover 3 opened on Loop 1604 in the former Roaring Fork location. The Austin location made the cut on CNN Travel’s “101 of the best sports bars in the U.S.” Now you can enjoy those burgers in San Antonio, too.

The Guardian, a U.K. newspaper, recently published a list of the best restaurants in San Antonio, authored by food critic Robin Goldstein. The list includes: The Granary, Mi Tierra, Chris Madrid’s, Dough, the Esquire Tavern, The Luxury, NAO, Sandbar, Schilo’s, and Rosario’s. Agree/disagree?
