Industry News: Barbaro opens, Hatch mania hits SA, and the North Side gets its macaron fix

Monte Vista has a new pizza place. Barbaro (2720 McCullough) is now open in the old Foundry space. The pizza restaurant from the folks at The Monterey offers a few pizza combinations or you can build your own pie. Standouts are the kale and honey combo and the hashbrown pizza. Drinks include beer, wine, dessert wine and cocktails. The space is completely indoors, as opposed to the Monty’s mostly-outdoor seating, so be prepared to wait at the bar. It’ll be worth it.
It’s Hatch time! From the way Central Market (4821 Broadway) and San Antonio foodies freak out about Hatch chiles, you’d think they were a local phenomenon. Not so—they’re named for the area they grow in, the Hatch Valley in New Mexico. They come to us by the truckload in August and the air over the city is thick with smoking peppers. I’m not sure why we go apeshit for Hatches when we have a plethora of local peppers, but whatever. Editor’s note: Seriously, someone please explain the fascination with these damn peppers!
And speaking of Central Market, it seems like they’ve been under construction for a year. It’s all been worth it, because now they have a gelato bar. Bonus: It is delicious! When I swung by recently, I sampled the pistachio and salted caramel. They’re not dabbling in subtle flavors here—everything is bold and in your face, in a good way. There are sorbet options as well, like blood orange. Since three-digit temperatures are likely to keep appearing on the thermometer through August, we all need ways to cool off, and frozen yogurt doesn’t always cut it.
Have you tried using the Bike Waiter yet? It’s a bike delivery service, bringing food from a variety of restaurants to your house (if you live or work in the downtown or adjacent areas). Bike Waiter is now delivering Rising Roll Gourmet (8522 Broadway), which offers catering, so you could also get food for a meeting or party if you order 24 hours ahead. As someone who’s suffered through my fair share of pizzas and box lunches at meetings, I’d love to have a local option for those times I must eat at the office.
If you love getting fresh French macarons but can’t make it to Bakery Lorraine from the North Side, you can now get them at Délice Chocolatier (946 N Loop 1604, Suite 145). Recent flavors have been dark Belgian chocolate, hibiscus, pistachio, strawberry, orange zest and raspberry violet. The bakery also features gourmet chocolates, wedding cakes, alfajores, Garibaldi’s and brownies.
