Down the Hatch: The Horse's Neck

Nightlife: It is the first of the 90-plus-degree days. The sun beats down on already sunburnt skin and it is too hot to be hung-over and to simultaneously suffer an allergy attack. I’m walking the dog, wondering where all these pigeons came from, when somehow a fire a By Jacob Burris 5/22/2013

Free samplings at Brasserie Pavil; Filling Station has a new name and expansion in the works

With Memorial Day upon us, we yearn anxiously for that elusive three-day weekend. Celebrate those who’ve served by heading to Brasserie Pavil (1818 N Loop 1604 W) for free booze. Sample some complimentary Angel’s Envy Kentucky bourbon from 4-6 p.m. Saturday. Free appetizers will be served on the patio. Then on Sunday come back for Pavil’s Bloody Marys from 2-4 p.m. Need we chant? USA! USA!

Also, the Filling Station in Southtown (701 S St. Mary’s) is now known as the Station Cafe. Turns out some litigious cretin already trademarked the old name. But the transition comes at an opportune time, as the Station also recently took over the space next door and plans to fill in the new site this July. Patrons will be seeing some new menu items as well, like pasta salads. A few specials will become menu mainstays, like the muffaletta and a sandwich with ghost peppers, the world’s hottest peppers.

Finally, Auden’s Kitchen (700 E Sonterra Blvd., # 1117) is refining their weekly wine tastings into a more focused monthly event. On the first Thursday of every month (first one: June 2) there will be a themed wine event not to be missed.
