Southtown will be the home to San Antonio’s second vegan-only restaurant as Señor Veggie (620 S Presa, (210) 788-8430) opens its doors on Friday, January 31. Formerly a catering company and Quarry Farmers and Ranchers Market staple, Señor Veggie replaces Mr. Tim’s Country Kitchen, which closed up shop mid-2013 and relocated to La Vernia. The menu will include market favorites such as falafel, red quinoa tabbouleh and baba ghanoush, while adding popular, elaborate items from their catering offerings. Look for an interesting selection of yogi-diet inspired bowls such as a Chinese hot bowl (bok choy, carrots, tofu, mushrooms and rice noodles), Korean bibimbap bowl (smoked tempeh, brown rice, spinach, zucchini and mushrooms) and a paella-style Fiduea bowl (angel hair pasta, kalamata olives, smoked paprika, roasted peppers and tomatoes). Owners Jose and Tiffany Cruz will also make their own artisanal nut cheeses and seitan (or “wheat meat”) in-house. Hours of operation were listed as 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday and 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday at press time.

January’s come and gone and we’ve all given up the ruse of resolutions—so how about a cookie? Molly Rodenberg and Lauren Pepping are changing up the dessert options in the city with their newly launched business, Cookie Cab ( The cookies-as-a-service company delivers five varieties including chocolate chip, oatmeal raisin, peanut butter, sugar and snickerdoodle on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The ordering process is dangerously easy, and cookies are $1 each. Rodenberg and Pepping hope to add more delivery days as business picks up.

The space formerly known as Auden’s Kitchen will now be home to Zoko Restaurant Bar & Grill (700 E Sonterra, (210) 494-2804), a tapas-style joint which will feature new American, French and Spanish dishes. Expect to find flatbread and moderately priced entrees. The tapas bar menu with $3-$6 plates sounds enticing. Zoko will kick off lunch Wednesday, January 29 and dinner on Friday January 31.

While on the subject of the North Side, Coco Lounge (18402 US 281 N, (210) 577-9927) is closed and plans to re-open seem in flux.

Speaking of Valentine’s Day, several eateries have announced prix fixe menus (you can find a complete list on; please keep in mind that V-Day lands on a Friday so you’ll look like a Grade-A asshole if you show up to just about any restaurant worth its salt without reservations.
