The Monterey gets fideo-friendly this year

The folks at The Monterey (1127 S St. Mary’s, (210) 745-2581) are readying a new fideo pop-up this weekend. E’Chingon, led by guest chef Mara Serna, will kick off Sunday, January 12 at 6 p.m. Serna’s experience includes Rick Bayless’ Frontera Grill, Houston’s The Pass & Provisions, Goro & Gun and currently Osteria Coppa; Serna spent a year at the Monty before heading to H-Town. The menu will include a few plates such as papas fritas, pinwheels, fried Brussels sprouts and a soft-cooked egg with caviar, pickled red onion and Takis (Hot Cheetos’ hotter Mexican cousin). Four fideo options will be available and the menu looks promising: smoked pasta, mescal, tomato, cream; shrimp pasta, seafood, spice, green onions; carne seca, fried egg, tomato, green onion, jalapeño; and umami pasta with mushrooms. The vermicelli will be homemade, obviously.

Imbibe Magazine, a media partner for the San Antonio Cocktail Conference, gave a tip of the hat to our city as one of its 75 “2014 Destinations to Watch.” The January issue highlighted five locations including Bohanan’s, Brooklynite, Esquire, Local Coffee and Tuk Tuk Tap Room as places to get your drink on in SA.

We’ve got two new brunch spots to nom at these days. Tucker’s Kozy Korner (1338 E Houston, (210) 320-2192), under new ownership by Chris Cullum of Cullum’s Attaboy, is offering Gospel Brunch on Sundays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. with bottomless mimosas ($13), a Bloody Mary bar ($7), “Benedict East,” homeslice bacon and eggs and Southern fried chicken. Prices range from $8-$10 for food. The bottomless mimosa ($12) offerings continue over at Taps y Tapas (1012 N Flores, (210) 277-7174), where they’re serving up corn masa waffles and milanesa chicken, as well as Mexican-tinged Eggs Benedict with poblano papas, jamon, poached eggs and ranchero hollandaise ($8-$12) on Sundays from noon to 3pm.

The Granary (602 Avenue A, (210) 228-0124) was featured as the No. 3 barbecue spot in 2013 by Huffington Post’s grilling authority, Steven Raichlen, for its modernist approach to ’cue. In even more awesome news, the restaurant announced its next guest chef visit via Facebook. Dallas’ John Tesar of Spoon Bar & Kitchen will be cooking alongside chef Tim Rattray on March 17. Keeps your peepers open for reservations.

Boardwalk on Bulverde (14732 Bulverde, (210) 402-2829), the granddaddy of all food truck parks, will celebrate its third anniversary on Friday, January 10 and Saturday, January 11, with free beer and a lineup of trucks. Visit for details.

In sad restaurant news, Restaurant Gwendolyn (152 E Pecan, Ste. 100, (210) 222-1849) has discontinued lunch service, and Tommy Moore’s Café & Deli has closed its doors at 915 S Hackberry.
