San Antonio's premier vegetarian (and kosher) restaurant is still going strong five years after it first opened its doors. And our readers keep going back to it, judging by the truckloads of votes that earned Green the top spots in two categories and made it runner-up in another (Best Local Desserts). During the last half-decade, Green has been updating and fine-tuning its menu, but the old Green burger (a homemade veggie patty served with avocado, field greens, tomato, and chipotle mayo) is still the queen of those who want to relish a healthier burger that won't short them on flavor. Perhaps the most underrated item on the menu is the buffalo chicken sandwich, a good-sized wheat meat slice served with greens, tomato, and chipotle sauce. The options here are varied, from appetizers to salads (you can't die without tasting Green's kale salad or the zucchini enchiladas topped with homemade chili and cheese), and the desserts are few, but dynamite: 100-percent vegan, homemade, and gluten-free cupcakes and cookies, and you can place special orders with 48-hour notice. And for those who can't get enough of Green (and the haters who predicted a short lifespan for the restaurant), a second location opened last October at 10003 NW Military with a few new menu items well worth trying.
