‘Top Chef Texas’ only taps two Texan chefs for program
Published: September 28, 2011
After all the hullabaloo over Top Chef filming in Texas, you’d think they’d pick more Texan contestants. Alas, only Andrew Curren and Paul Qui from Austin will be representing the Lone Star state out of a cast of 29. (Somebody better tell this bunch that San Antonio outdid every other Texas city in Travel + Leisure magazine’s ranking of the best U.S. cities for foodies! That’s right. We’re number 10.) Already the media is referring to Top Chef’s “Texas-sized group of contestants,” and Bravo promos show host Padma Lakshmi eating ribs on a bale of hay. Though there are no San Antonio cheftestants to root for, I’ll be playing my own Top Chef drinking game, taking a sip whenever anyone conspicuously dons an oversized cowboy hat, says something is “bigger in Texas,” or finds another way to offend locals with well-worn stereotypes.
Lastly: food truck park Boardwalk on Bulverde is bringing Oktoberfest to San Antonio on Friday, Saturday and Sunday with the Octo-Beer Feast. Admission is free, and the beer will be plentiful, with Leinenkugel, Miller Lite, Blue Moon, Jeremiah Weed, and Coors for sale. It looks like many of the BoB regulars will be there.
