Human Terrain

Human Terrain is based on a somewhat controversial program that embeds social scientists with combat troops in an attempt to "gather intelligence and target potential enemies for the military." The life and work of Humanitarian activist Michael Bhatia (who died while working with a Human Terrain team in Afghanistan) is central to the film. Drawing seems to be the common thread in the wide-ranging exhibition of seven artists curated by Scott A. Sherer, Ph.D. The show's invitation reprints one of Hong Chun Zhang's large-scale drawings depicting a fluid cascade of braided hair, a motif she uses to reference the ties that bind her and her sisters. Artists Judith Cotrell, Kris Jones, Daniel Zeller, Janet Chaffee, Darcie Polo, and Albert Wong present work that ranges from the photo-realistic (even trompe l'oeil) to the simplicity of geometric color fields and sharp, arcing lines. Through graphics, video, and interactive technologies, this enlightening exhibition explores three themes: the everyday experience of race, the contemporary science that challenges common ideas about race, and the history of race in the United States. Highlights of this traveling exhibition include "Who's Talking?," in which guests can match voices with photos based on speech patterns, "The Colors We Are," where visitors can scan their skin and see where it fits in as a color chip compared with others, and "Living With Race Theater," a collection of filmed accounts of people affected by racism.
