Here in San Anto, Godai embodies sushi Texas-style: big, deep-fried, and drizzled with spicy. Of course chef-owner William "Goro" Pitchford does authentic Japanese with the best of 'em, dishing out the freshest sashimi from behind the bar — "Goro's combo" is a perfect mix of tuna, yellow-tail, salmon, squid, and unagi, for instance. But Goro's particularly proud of his daring collection of rolls that scream Texas. There's his seafood "enchilada" (mounds of spicy crab wrapped in fish, avocado, and topped with squid salad), the mammoth A&M and Texas rolls, and the Heart Attack, which is madly indulgent for sushi (a roll of spicy tuna, cream cheese, and jalapeno deep fried and drizzled in eel sauce). Goro's signature, the Longhorn roll, is similarly decadent — tuna, salmon, and cream cheese wrapped in shrimp and avocado and buried beneath a mountain of crab. Goro throws some spicy mayo and a fistful of tempura crunchies at it just to finish the job.
