Best Place to Adopt a Pet

1. Humane Society
4804 Fredericksburg, (210) 226-7461, sahumane.org

San Antonio’s premier no-kill shelter boasts a 97 percent save rate (2012). Adoption fees are $65-$99 for dogs and $30-$50 for cats and include spay/neuter surgery, first set of vaccinations, microchip, de-wormer, flea and heartworm prevention, collar, tag, complimentary wellness exam within the first five days of adoption, 14-day complimentary follow up care at any VCA animal hospital, 30 days Sheltercare insurance, and a $5 coupon for Science Diet pet food. Hot dog! But seriously, please do not buy your companion animal: adopt it from places like the Humane Society. Accept the fact that there aren’t enough homes for living animals, and spay or neuter yours.

2. Animal Defense League
11300 Nacogdoches, (210) 655-1481, adltexas.org

3. Animal Care Services
