Best of SA 2012

Best Local Elected Official (National)

1. Charles Gonzalez
U.S. House of Representatives (D20), gonzalez.house.gov

After more than a decade in Congress, this seven-term San Antonio Democrat announced last year he wouldn't run again, thus closing the chapter on a San Antonio dynasty. Gonzalez succeeded his father to the seat, who served on the Hill for over three decades. For his part, Gonzalez rose in the ranks to eventually lead the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, giving him the daunting, if not impossible, task of pushing comprehensive immigration reform in a GOP-led Congress drenched with anti-immigrant fervor (see the No. 3 placeholder on this list for more on that). In addition to pushing immigration reforms for years, Gonzalez also co-sponsored 2009 legislation to expand hate-crimes definitions to protect LGBT victims.

2. Kay Bailey Hutchison (Tie)
U.S. Senator, hutchison.senate.gov

Lloyd Doggett (D25)
U.S. House of Representatives, doggett.house.gov

3. Lamar Smith (D21)
U.S. House of Representatives, lamarsmith.house.gov
