Best Local Artist

1. Nik Soupe (Soup)
The Paint Yard, 525 San Pedro, (210) 229-1707, thepaintyard.com

You’ve probably seen him working on a piece at an ArtSlam, the Korova, or at On the Half-Shell Oyster bar. Curator at The Paint Yard, a spray paint shop and gallery located on the 500 block of San Pedro, Nik Soupe hardly grew up a delinquent. He first picked up his spray can one summer at his dad’s auto body shop and started priming cars. He says painting with spray paint feels more abstract than other mediums, but he still creates a vivid, photorealistic style. “It’s all an illusion but once you learn the tricks it becomes magic,” said Soupe. Painting in front of a live audience gives him an adrenaline rush where mistakes suddenly aren’t mistakes anymore, they’re part of an evolving process. See Soupe live at the Paint Yard’s next Content Under Pressure (CUP) event in May, with national and international graffiti artists.
