1. Little Italy
824 Afterglow, (210) 349-2060

Deliciously old-school in its approach to cuisine, décor, and soundtrack, Little Italy is a charming throwback to the days of Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin. Winning over regulars since opening its doors back in 1983, the family-owned operation toasts the motherland with big portions of homey Italian staples served atop red-and-white checkered tablecloths. The extensive menu complements the usual suspects (linguini with clams, fettuccine Alfredo, veal Marsala, chicken parmigiana) with off-the-menu treats (like the decadent shrimp Francesca topped with mushrooms in a white wine sauce), a well-rounded wine list, and an array of homemade cakes — making over-ordering a distinct possibility. Taking pride in their hand-tossed New York-style pizzas ($12.99 for an 18-inch pie), servers deliver complimentary slivers to tables like bait.
