The smoking ban has cleaned up the air in SA bars since it went into effect last year, but it's wreaked havoc on the lounge atmosphere for traditionalists. When downtown carousers want to rock it old school with a brew and a butt, they head outdoors to an icehouse or go north to Alamo Heights where ash trays are still allowed inside public drinking establishments. The 5050 is a corner bar on Broadway with friendly neighborhood attitude, and a decent burger, too. The back bar is modest but offers the necessary spirits; beer flows on draught. There's singer-songwriter music every Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday, and their website promises "A F*cking Great time to play trivia and win prizes. Never a cover!" on Tuesdays.
