Local beers you should know about

If you drink ______, you may like _______

In the days of "faux craft" and international conglomerates owning some of the most beloved U.S. beer icons, it's hard to know the provenance of the beer in your glass. Here are some suggestions for local beers you may like as well as or better than the national brands and big imports. There's also a better chance of shaking the brewer's hand while you're drinking the beer.

If you drink: Budweiser (Anheuser-Busch InBev, Belgium), light American lager

You may like: Lobo Lager (Pedernales Brewing Co., Fredericksburg), pre-Prohibition lager

If you drink: Blue Moon White (MolsonCoors/SAB Miller Brewing, Canada/England), Belgian Witbier

You may like: Freetail Rye Wit (Freetail Brewing Co., San Antonio), Belgian Wit with rye malt

If you drink: Newcastle Brown (Heineken/Carlsberg, Netherlands/Denmark), English brown ale

You may like: Texas Honey Ale (Guadalupe Brewing Co., New Braunfels), American amber ale with Texas honey

If you drink: Pabst Blue Ribbon (Pabst Brewing Co., Los Angeles), budget light American lager

You may like: Alamo Golden Ale (Alamo Beer Co., San Antonio, but brewed in Blanco), mild golden/blonde ale

If you drink: Guinness (St. James Gate brewery — owned by Diageo PLC, London, England), Irish stout

You may like: Spire Stout (Blue Star Brewing Co., San Antonio), Irish stout

If you drink: Trois Pistoles (Unibroue, Canada — owned by Sapporo, Japan), Belgian dark strong ale

You may like: La Bestia Aimable (Ranger Creek Brewing Co., San Antonio), Belgian dark strong ale
