October 13: 2012 Cavalcade of Stars featuring Esperanza Spalding*
A precursor to its official season opener, the Carver welcomes Esperanza Spalding's distinct voice back to the Alamo City for the annual Cavalcade of Stars event. In 2011, the Portland-born multi-instrumentalist became the first jazz musician to earn a Grammy for Best New Artist, enraging a gaggle of Justin Bieber fans in the process. The New York Times described this year's Radio Music Society — Spalding's fourth release to date — as a "journey through soul, gospel, balladry and big-band swing."
October 27: Poncho Sanchez & His Latin Jazz Band
November 8: The Royal Drummers and Dancers of Burundi
November 30: Bettye LaVette
On the horizon: Christmas with Aaron Neville (December 6); TU Dance (January 18); Christian McBride & Inside Straight (February 9); The Renaissance Guild presents A Raisin in the Sun (February 15-24); Terri Hendrix (March 22); Kenny Barron (April 12); Philandanco! (May 3); ETHEL with Robert Mirabal (May 17); Ronnie Laws & Tom Browne (June 15).
