Fall Arts Preview: Festivals, food, drink & outdoor fun

Oktoberfest
One of the most popular expressions of German kultur is Oktoberfest, a two-week long party filled with beer, polkas, and piles of food. Founded in 1867, Beethoven Maennerchor is one of the oldest German singing societies in Texas, and hosts of the annual fall celebration in SA at their Halle und Garten with an outpouring of good cheer. Huevos Rancheros Breakfast Gala & Silent Art Auction
The main fundraiser for San Anto Cultural Arts and their famous mural public art program, this gala has street sense (entrance fee is a suggested 99 cents to $99) and a sense of humor — each year a King and Queen Huevo are chosen to reign over breakfast. This is the 15th running — the event's Quinceañera — and the royals are famed SA painter Alex Rubio and Carmen Tafolla, world-class writer and SA's inaugural Poet Laureate. Art works by 50 local artists will be donated for auction.

Solar Fest
Solar demonstrations, food, and outdoor fun fill this community fest presented by Solar San Antonio, a nonprofit dedicated to making solar energy part of our new economy. Followed on October 7 with the Solar Tour, presenting 20 private and commercial solar sites in metro SA. Check website for map and times.

Síclovía
Imagine streets from The Pearl to Alamo Plaza as a pedestrian and bicycle pathway with no cars, but packed with stops along the way for music and refrescos. What sounds like a futuristic urban dream happens twice a year in SA, part of the Ciclovía movement that began in Bógota, Colombia three decades ago, and has since appeared in cities worldwide to promote bicycle use as the healthy choice for body and planet.

Culinaria's Feastivál
Eating scrumptious delights doesn't have to add inches to your waistline. Feastivál is Culinaria's focus on health, with savory dishes by local chefs, cooking demos, wine seminars, and heaps of healthy recipe advice.

Una Noche de la Gloria
This West Side extravaganza is the fall festival for the parish of Our Lady of Guadalupe Church, but has grown into the one of the biggest street expressions of art, music, and fashion in the city.
