600 Soledad, (210) 207-2500, mysapl.org

The public library system's "enchilada" branch — so dubbed for its exterior paint job — is worth visiting — frequently. Original artwork by Jesse Treviño and Dale Chihuly grace the premises, a more expansive DVD and video collection you'll be hard-pressed to find, and the Texana collection also impresses with ancillary genealogy classes offered for free. A dearth of volumes in the Latino collection was criticized early on, but the research assortment has since grown to an impressive scale. We also enjoy the Book Cellar in the building's underbelly, offering cheap used books, frequently of the oversized, color-plate variety. Designed by noted architect Ricardo Legorreta and opened to great fanfare 17 years ago at the site of an old Sears building, the branch is still worth celebrating.
