Oh, you have a Kindle? Awesome, is it now? Does it have an ounce of the atmosphere our beloved Half Price Books on Broadway holds in just one of its many run-down wooden floorboards? Can it reproduce the chill of running your fingers across the worn pages of some forgotten printing of Charles Bukowski's Play the Piano Drunk Like a Percussion Instrument Until the Fingers Begin to Bleed a Bit or turn you on to a craft book on how to crochet robots? (Hush, my dear technophile. These are rhetorical questions.) Sure, you can fill it up with all your favorite volumes of Harry Potter, Twilight, and Dan Brown mysteries, but there will forever be a place of honor for the touch and feel of good old-fashioned used books at seriously reduced prices: genre-by-genre sales shelves mean there are dollar-books galore here, as well as a wealth of vinyl, CDs, and DVDs, to boot. Lots to love once you unplug.
