The heart of the First Friday art party, Blue Star Contemporary Art has been rocking Southtown for over 25 years with shows featuring local and out-of-town talent. It all began when a group of local artists were refused a show at a local museum; undaunted, they set up in what was then an abandoned tire warehouse. The show was a hit; it morphed into the annual Contemporary Art Month, and the ragged commercial space became the Blue Star Arts Center, with the similarly named arts nonprofit as the main tenant. Fast forward a quarter century, the art shows are still killer but have grown to include exhibitions by international artists. The crowds are big, but Blue Star isn't just mounting neighborhood art shows these days. It's sending the works of SA artists overseas to intrigue other audiences, too.
